Already 29 years of age when he made his Collingwood debut, Bert Colechin went on to enjoy a brief but quite noteworthy VFL career. In 1918 he was on a half back flank in the Magpies’ losing grand final team against South Melbourne, while the following year he occupied the same position, and was among the best players afield, for the victorious flag decider against Richmond. He made it three grand final appearances in a row in 1920 when he lined up in a back pocket, but was unable to prevent Richmond from reversing the previous season’s result.
When he retired in 1921 Colechin had played 57 VFL games for the Magpies and scored two goals. He played once for Victoria. Prior to joining Collingwood he had played for Fitzroy Juniors and VFA side Prahran.
