Having played for VFA team Sandringham prior to the war Bert Lucas played seven games and booted five goals for Carlton in 1944. Wartime commitments prevented him from fronting up in 1945 and when he resumed in 1946 it was with South Melbourne, the club which had lost to Carlton in the previous season’s notorious ‘bloodbath grand final’.
Lucas proved himself a useful ruckman with South over the next five seasons during which he made 69 senior appearances and registered 31 goals. He was club skipper in his penultimate season.
After leaving the VFL scene behind Bert Lucas spent the 1951 season captain-coaching TANFL side Sandy Bay. He later returned to Victoria and had a spell as player coach of Nathalia.
