Melbourne recruited Bill Daly from Wonthaggi in 1913 but he only managed a couple of appearances and one goal for the year. In 1915 he was cleared to South Melbourne, where he came into his own as a highly dependable defender. He was on a half back flank in South’s 9.8 to 7.15 defeat of Collingwood in the 1918 grand final. In 1920, after 59 VFL games and one goal for the southerners, he crossed to VFA side Footscray where, over the course of that season and the next, he added a final eight games to his career tally.
