A handy follower and defender Bill Deague was recommended to Melbourne by former Collingwood player Maurie Sheehy. He was not always an automatic choice for the seniors but was eminently reliable when called on. He played 56 VFL games and kicked 11 goals for Melbourne between 1932 and 1936 before rounding off his career with 43 games and 35 goals for Melbourne from 1937 to 1939.
