Bill Pavey was a solid follower and defender from Newport who served Hawthorn well in precisely 100 VFL games from 1937 to 1945, in the course of which he scored seven goals. He was quite small and light for a follower at just 179cm and 78kg. However, he boasted a good spring and surprising strength, attributes which helped him compete effectively with opponents of bigger build.
