Although he normally played at full forward Bob Merrick (shown right) was not a very reliable kick for goal. Nevertheless, he enjoyed quite a noteworthy playing career which included topping the VFA’s goal kicking ladder in 1915 with 43 majors, and heading Fitzroy’s list on four straight occasions. He commenced his career with East Sydney before joining Port Melbourne in 1912. In two separate stints (1912-15 and 1925-28) with the Borough he played 89 games and scored 236 goals. His VFL career with the Maroons yielded 59 appearances and 181 goals.
