Having played for Geelong under 18s Bowen Lockwood was picked up by Port Adelaide in the 1996 National Draft. There were hopes that he might develop into an imposing key position forward and while this did not quite materialise he still produced some compelling football, particularly in his first couple of seasons when he played 30 out of a possible 44 games. Thereafter, however, he was seriously hampered by injury, and in 2002, although he remained on the Power’s list, he eventually felt compelled to retire because his injury problems had become insurmountable. He had played 50 AFL games and scored 45 goals.

When fit but not selected by Port Lockwood played in the SANFL for Central District. From 1997 to 1999 and in 2001 he made 33 senior appearances for the Bulldogs and kicked 57 goals. His tally of 37 goals in 2001 was good enough to top the club’s list for the year.
