The highlight of Brad Shine’s football career came in 1983 when he was awarded the Simpson Medal after helping Swan Districts to a grand final victory over Claremont. Recruited by Swans from Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault in 1980, he also played in the triumphant grand finals of 1982 against Claremont and 1984 versus East Fremantle. In 1985 he crossed to Carlton in the VFL but managed only 23 senior games in four seasons. He did, however, win a reserve grade best and fairest award in his first season. Shine played mainly as a defender while with the Blues after having been used primarily as an on-baller and half forward with Swans.

In 1989 Brad Shine returned home to Swan Districts and played on for two more years, taking his final tally of WAFL games with the club to 111, and the number of goals kicked to 85. In 1990 he skippered the club to a premiership.
