Boasting obvious talent, but lacking consistency, Brent Grgic never quite managed to produce the breakout season he threatened. Nevertheless, he certainly produced some good football with Melbourne in a variety of roles over the course of a 77 game, 29 goal career from 1997 to 2001. A highlight, apart from the result, was playing in the 2000 grand final clash with Essendon. At the outset of his career it was mooted that he might be capable of stepping into the shoes of recently retired Demons champion Gary Lyon, but implicit comparisons of this sort are seldom helpful.

In 2002 Grgic moved to Geelong, where he had earlier played under 18s football, but in the main he found the going tough, and after scratching out 13 appearances and three goals over two seasons he was de-listed. Ironically, his best performance for the Cats probably came in a match against his former club, Melbourne, in 2002, the same season that saw him play in Geelong’s VFL premiership-winning team.
