Brett James was a gutsy and effective performer with Norwood, Collingwood and Adelaide in a career encompassing well in excess of 300 senior games. That career began and ended with the Redlegs, whom he joined from Kersbrook, and for whom he made 234 appearances between 1990 and 1993 and from 1997 to 2006. He spent the 1994-5-6 seasons with Collingwood, playing 42 games, before returning home to South Australia where, for the next four seasons, he divided his time between the Crows, for whom he played 76 times, and Norwood.
In 1997 James enjoyed the rare distinction of playing in victorious Grand Final teams for both clubs, with the Redlegs' triumph over Port being achieved alongside his younger brother, Roger. Brett James also played in Adelaide's 1998 flag-winning side. After returning to the Parade full time in 2001 he became a key figure at the club, serving as captain between 2002 and 2006, and claiming best and fairest awards on three occasions.
