After a peripatetic football journey which took in stints with clubs in four states Brett Stephens lined up for his VFL debut with Fitzroy, aged twenty-six, in 1987, and quickly made up for lost time by becoming a highly dependable and versatile key position player. Between his debut and 1993 he played 133 V/AFL games a nd kicked 52 goals. Runner-up in Fitzroy's best and fairest count on a couple of occasions, he played state of origin football both for Tasmania and Victoria. He also represented Australia against Ireland in three compromise rules tests in 1990.
