Bryan Martyn, father of Mick Martyn, was a tough, strongly built ruckman who gloried in the nickname ‘Skinny’. He came up through the grades at North Melbourne before making his senior debut in 1953. When he retired in 1958 he had played 73 VFL games and kicked 16 goals. He enjoyed an especially impressive 1957 season, winning the Kangaroos’ best and fairest award, and representing Victoria against Tasmania.
