Many footballers are quick, but few if any have left opponents in their wake as often and as conspicuously as Carlton's early 20th century wingman Charlie Roland. In addition to the wing, Roland could take a turn on the ball, or hold down a forward position. From 1900 to 1905 and in 1908 he played a total of precisely 100 games and booted 24 goals. Roland also played half a dozen representative games for the VFL. He spent the 1906 and 1907 seasons playing for West Australian goldfields club Boulder City while after leaving Carlton he played one last season of football with Essendon Association in the VFA.
