Utility Chris Wittman enjoyed a memorable if brief career at football’s top level. He joined Hawthorn from Xavier College and made his senior VFL debut in 1986. Part of his value lay in his ability to play well in a variety of positions, including back pocket, wing, rover or as a small forward. In both 1988 and 1989 he played in Hawk premiership-winning teams, but in subsequent seasons he struggled to achieve regular selection, leading to a departure to St Kilda in 1993 where he played the last nine games of his career, without registering a goal. The Hawthorn phase of that career had seen him make 89 appearances and score 61 goals.
