Although quite slight in stature at 179cm and 73kg Colin Tully was a superb kick and was once credited with kicking a goal at the MCG, using a drop kick, from a distance of some 70 metres. Extremely capable at ground level, he struggled to hold his own in aerial contests, but overall was a useful performer for Collingwood in 92 VFL games between 1965 and 1970, kicking 43 goals. Initially used as a centreman, he later developed into a purposeful, rebounding back pocket specialist.

Between 1971 and 1973 Tully played 53 WANFL games and kicked 32 goals for Claremont. He then coached Glenorchy for a time, ostensibly in an off-field capacity, although he did take to the field on one occasion.

Colin Tully played interstate football for both Victoria in 1967 and Western Australia at the 1972 Perth carnival.
