Craig Cleave was recruited by Geelong from Leitchville and he made his senior VFL debut in 1982. Capable of playing in several different positions, he was never really more than a fringe player with the Cats, although injuries certainly did not help his cause. In 1986, for instance, he was enjoying his best ever season only for a dislocated shoulder to scupper his hopes mid-year. From 1982 to 1986 he played 48 VFL games and scored 12 goals. At the end of his debut season he was at centre half back for the reserves as they accounted for the grand final challenge of St Kilda.
