Henry Dalziel O’Brien - commonly referred to as ‘Dally’ - enjoyed a noteworthy VFL career with North Melbourne between 1938 and 1949 during which he played 137 games and kicked 63 goals. A rugged, straight ahead type of player who boasted boundless stamina he was in many ways the archetypal utility, capable of slotting into the team wherever needed. He captained North in 1944 and 1945 and in the latter year had the distinction of leading the club in its first VFL final. The sort of player who seemingly improved with age he won North’s best and fairest award in his second to last season. Dally O’Brien’s brother Jack played league football for Essendon.
