After initially failing to make the grade at Footscray Danny Del-Re crossed to Williamstown in 1987 where he produced consistently good football over the next three seasons, prompting the Bulldogs to offer him a second chance. This he took with open arms, proving himself a highly competent forward who marked well, was hard to beat one on one, and kicked straight. Between 1990 and 1994 he played 62 AFL games and kicked 139 goals for the Bulldogs, topping their goal kicking list in 1992 with 70 goals and in 1993 with 36.

The 1995 season saw Del-Re at South Adelaide whose goal kicking list he promptly topped with a career high 90 majors.
