Darren Kowal was picked up by Melbourne after he had played in Claremont’s 1989 WAFL premiership-winning team. In 1990 he managed just three senior AFL games but the ensuing four seasons saw him making his mark as a close checking, tenacious run-with player. A poor 1997 season gave rise to speculation that he might be de-listed but he received a stay of execution and played good, consistent football in 1998, before an under-par 1999 campaign brought the curtain down on his 105 game, 46 goal AFL career.
Kowal returned to Claremont in 2000 and played on until 2005, by which time he had played 105 WAFL games and registered 82 goals.
