Originally from Kerang, Darren Troy initially played in the under 19s at Geelong before progressing to the seniors late in the 1983 season. He played just one game in 1983 and then, after not playing seniors at all the following year, transferred to South Adelaide in the SANFL. His form with the Panthers was good, highlighted by winning the club’s 1986 best and fairest award.

The 1987 season saw Troy back at Geelong and having a second stab at VFL football, and on this occasion he did well, playing 45 games and scoring six goals over four seasons. A utility, he was particularly prominent in 1987 and 1988 before falling out of favour somewhat during his final two seasons.

In 1991 Troy returned to South Adelaide and had taken his games played tally to 74 and the number of goals kicked to 40 by the time he retired at the conclusion of the following season.
