Son of former Claremont and Geelong star John O’Connell, David O’Connell shared many of his father’s attributes, and enjoyed a fine career in his own right. An old style tap ruckman and forward, he commenced with Claremont in 1984, and his eventual tally of 107 games included the winning grand final of 1987 against Claremont, and the losing flag decider of 1990 against Swan Districts, which proved to be his last WASFL match. He booted 123 goals.

He also had a brief V/AFL career, registering 27 games and half a dozen goals with West Coast from 1988 to 1990, and 21 games and 13 goals for Fitzroy in 1991-2.

David O’Connell’s brother Michael also played for both Claremont and West Coast.
