A utility who especially liked to play up forward, David Strooper was capable of excellent football but only produced it intermittently. This was particularly the case at his first league club, Fitzroy, where he spent much of his time in the reserves. After 43 games and 38 goals for the Lions from 1987 to 1991 he nominated for the draft and was picked up by Sydney. His first season with the Swans was by some measure the best of his career as he played all 22 matches for the year, kicking 44 goals and taking a team best 131 marks. After that, however, he experienced form and fitness problems which limited him to just 10 appearances and 14 goals in 1993. De-listed by the Swans, he was offered a lifeline by St Kilda, but in an injury-undermined 1994 campaign managed just half a dozen games and three goals before calling it a day. He later played with some success for Diamond Valley Football League side Northcote Park.
