Melbourne recruited Des Campbell from Shepparton United in 1969 and he made his senior VFL debut the following year, albeit without really establishing himself. He did, however, play in a winning grand final with the Demons’ reserves.

Campbell spent the seasons from 1971 to 1974 back at Shepparton United before deciding to have a second stab at VFL football with the Dees in 1975. A solid defender, in 1975 and 1976 he was a regular senior player, but in 1977 he played just eight games whilst captaining the reserves. He retired at the end of the 1977 season having played 50 VFL games and scored 13 goals. He played and coached at various country clubs for another 15 years.
