After commencing with Collingwood’s thirds Des Herbert was a member in 1979 of the club’s losing reserve grade grand final team. He made his senior debut in 1980 and over the course of that season and half of the next played eight VFL games and booted five goals.

Midway through the 1981 season he crossed to Fitzroy where he embarked on another one and a half year stint which saw him register 14 games and five goals. Included in his games tally were two finals matches in 1981.

The 1984 season saw him at West Adelaide and he hit the ground running by winning the club’s best and fairest award. A resolute, extremely focused on-baller, he remained with the Bloods until 1987, by which time he had played 83 SANFL games and kicked 101 goals.
