Recruited locally from Leopold, South Melbourne’s Dick Mullaly was a capable all round footballer who played mostly in the centre, the position he occupied in the club’s losing challenge final of 1912 against Essendon. When South again lost the premiership decider two years later, this time against Carlton, he lined up in a forward pocket and kicked one of his side’s four goals. From 1912 to 1917 he played 69 VFL games for South, and scored a dozen goals. He later served as the club’s secretary, a position he held during the famed ‘foreign legion’ era of the 1930s.
