From West Coburg, Don Palmer was an accomplished centreman whose VFL career with North Melbourne was short-circuited by injury. He commenced that career in 1959, and, after being in and out of the side initially, became a regular senior player the following year. However, after that he was repeatedly sidelined by injury, so that when eventually forced to retire in 1964 he had only managed 50 appearances and 23 goals in half a dozen seasons.
