Ernie Loveless joined St Kilda from local club St Kilda District and gave the club sound service, mainly as a defender, in 42 VFL games from 1926 to 1931. He crossed to Hawthorn in 1933 and continued to perform impressively, winning a club best and fairest award in his second season. His ‘party trick’ was to go on long, weaving runs tapping the ball ahead of himself and dodging opponents as he went. Appointed Hawthorn vice-captain in 1935, he spent both that season and the next in the role before retiring. He had played 56 VFL games for the Mayblooms.
