A dynamic and skilful rover, Ernie Foo was one of a select group of ethnic Chinese players to play top level football, a sport he took up whilst attending Wesley College in Melbourne. He played his early football for YMCA in the NSWAFL between 1909 and 1912, helping the side to a premiership in 1910. He also played representative football for either Combined Sydney or New South Wales on half a dozen occasions. In 1914 he surfaced at St Kilda for whom he played four VFL games and scored two goals.
