Francis Jackson joined South Melbourne from Richmond in 1975 as part of the deal which saw John Pitura moving in the opposite direction. In two years with the Tigers Jackson had played just half a dozen senior games[1] but he soon made his mark at South, developing into a doggedly consistent defender, usually either at centre half back or on a half back flank. In truth he was probably a little short for centre half back at 184cm but his great determination and persistence helped compensate for this. He played precisely 100 VFL games for the Swans between 1975 and 1981 and in 1983, a tally which would have been quite a bit higher had he not been such a frequent victim of injury.
Jackson later spent the 1987 season as non-playing coach of Sandringham in the VFA. He also spent some time back at Richmond as the club's recruiment manager.
