Before he embarked on a VFL career Frank Love was a prominent sportsman in the Wimmera, playing football for Nhill from 1906 to 1909, as well as excelling at cricket and billiards. Some records suggest that he may have played some football with North Melbourne in 1909, but this has proved impossible to substantiate. He was recruited by Richmond in 1910 and went on to play 49 VFL games for the club over five seasons, without registering a goal. He mostly played at full back and centre half back.
