A fast, feisty wingman from Surrey Hills, the highlight of Fred Kirkwood’s VFL career was participation, on the wing needless to say, in Essendon’s 1912 grand final defeat of South Melbourne. Prior to joining the Same Old he had played 18 games and scored seven goals for Fitzroy in 1910-11. His stint with Essendon ended in 1914, by which time he had played 42 games for the club and registered eight goals.
