Gary Odgers played his early senior football with Ballarat Football League club Golden Point, from where he was recruited by St Kilda. A genuine utility in that he adapted well to almost any role, he played most of, and arguably his best, football as a defender. From 1981 to 1987 he played 91 VFL games for the Saints and booted 28 goals. He had a particularly strong campaign in 1985 when he made a career high 20 senior appearances and earned the only eight Brownlow votes of his career.
