Despite appearing awkward and uncoordinated Gary Lazarus was an important player for Fitzroy during what was a predominantly dire time for the club. He debuted in the seniors in 1963, having progressed straight from the thirds. Mostly used as a forward, he could also take a turn in the ruck. He was Lions top goal kicker in 1963 with 35 goals, 1965 (32), 1966 (39) and 1967 (35). Between 1963 and 1970 he played a total of 132 VFL games and booted 206 goals.
