Short, stocky and dynamic, Gary Moorcroft was a highly effective small forward who was pre-eminently capable of the spectacular, a prime case in point being his 2001 Mark of the Year which he captured after a double leap onto and over the back of Brad Johnson of the Western Bulldogs.

As a youngster, Moorcroft had won the 1994 Morrish Medal whilst playing for Northern Knights, and the following year found him making his senior AFL debut for Essendon. By the time he crossed to Melbourne after the 2002 season he had played 95 games and scored 102 goals for the Bombers, with the highlight coming in 2000 when he contributed a goal to a 19.21 to 11.9 grand final defeat of Melbourne. He also played in the following season’s grand final loss to Brisbane, when he again kicked a single goal.

Moorcroft’s stint with the Demons was cruelly de-railed by a serious knee injury after he had played just three games and kicked two goals.
