Originally from Northern United, Gavin Exell spent some time at Carlton but was unable to break into the seniors. Geelong took a punt on him, and their confidence turned out to be justified as he proved a handy acquisition, playing 53 games between 1987 and 1991 and scoring 111 goals. Mostly used at the goal front, his haul of 62 goals in 1989 was the best by a Cats player in that year’s home and away rounds. However, he was overtaken in the finals series, most of which he missed with injury, by Gary Ablett.
In 1992 Exell joined Fitzroy but only managed five appearances and a couple of goals for the year. He later played for Stanhope in the Kyabram and District Football League and was that competition’s top goal kicker in 2000, 2001 and 2003 with over 100 goals each year.
