After playing for Preston in the VJFA George Gough joined Fitzroy in 1919 and spent three seasons with the club, playing 23 VFL games and kicking 28 goals. He was never quite assured of his place in the seniors, and it was rumoured that he and Roys coach Percy Parratt did not see eye to eye. At any rate, the next few seasons saw him lining up for his local side, Northcote. Playing mainly as a full forward, he topped the VFA goal kicking list in 1924 with 83 goals. In a match against Prahran that year he booted 25 goals, which remains a VFA/L all time record.

Gough’s consistently good form elicited interest from Carlton, who eventually recruited him in 1927. In two seasons with the Blues he played 24 VFL games and scored 66 goals. Only once during that time did he fail to kick at least one goal in a match.

In 1929 Gough returned to Northcote where he played in the hitherto unaccustomed position of centre wing. He did not complete the season, however, claiming he had lost his passion for the game. As a consequence, he missed the chance of participating in a premiership triumph, as the Brickfielders downed Port Melbourne in that year’s grand final. His two stints with Northcote saw him play 72 VFA games and register 245 goals.

In 1930 Gough appears to have recovered something of his love for the game as he spent the season, his last in football, playing for Preston in the VFA.
