Hawthorn recruited George Dower locally from South Hawthorn and he developed into one of the league's best centre half backs. Superb overhead, he was chosen to represent the Big V in both 1937 and 1938. Between 1933 and 1940 he played precisely 100 games for the Mayblooms, kicking 17 goals.
