Gerald McCarthy was a steady, strong marking defender who suffered the twin misfortunes of missing selection for Hawthorn’s 1975 and 1976 grand finals after being a regular in the team for the majority of both seasons.
After 75 games and 18 goals for the Hawks from 1972 to 1977 McCarthy was traded to Fitzroy where he added an identical number of games and 23 goals. The Hawks could be adjudged the main beneficiaries of the trade as they got Terry Wallace, who was residentially bound to Fitzroy but had yet to play a senior game, for the club in exchange. Wallace went on to enjoy a stellar 254 game league career with three clubs.
