Graham Donaldson played 106 games for Carlton between 1955 and 1962. He spent the first three seasons of his time with the Blues at centre half forward but his career blossomed when thrown into the ruck in 1958. He polled nine Brownlow votes that year and 11 in each of the following two seasons. After playing in Carlton's losing 1962 Grand Final side, Donaldson did what was not uncommon of stars in his era, and turned his back on VFL football to take up a country coaching role with Morwell. He led the Tigers to the 1966 premiership.

Donaldson coached Fitzroy from 1971 to 1974 but could lift the Lions to no higher than sixth, which he did in the first year of his tenure.
