Graham Dempster joined South Melbourne in 1972 from Springvale, which had not at that point in time been admitted to the VFA. Aged just 17 when he made his senior VFL debut, he struggled to establish himself initially, but from 1976 he became a key member of the Swans team. He was a handy key position player who was used mostly in defence early in his career before being tried, with some success, as a forward. Dempster’s eight season career with South saw him play 64 VFL games and score 24 goals. He later spent the period from 1983 to 1991 back at Springvale, which had entered the VFA second division in 1982. He was a member of the Scorpions’ 1983 second division premiership-winning side and was team captain in his last season.
