Rover Grant Fowler found himself marginalised at Fitzroy because the Lions had a surfeit of small men and, after 35 games and 31 goals between 1976 and 1979, he was cleared to join Essendon. Finding the milieu at Windy Hill more congenial he added 63 games and 49 goals over four seasons and was a regular in the side in the first three of them. In 1983 he retired briefly because of work commitments before returning late in the year whereupon he was cleared to Hawthorn. He played one game for the Hawks in 1983 and one more the following year, giving him a career tally of precisely 100 VFL games.
Honest and steady rather than eye catchingly flamboyant in style, at his best he could match it with the finest rovers in the land. A career highlight was playing in Essendon’s 1981 night series flag-winning team.
