Greg Stafford grew up in a rugby adoring family but decided to try his hand at the national code when a football oval was built near his home. He proved to be a fine exponent of the strange game, and indeed at his peak in the mid-nineties had few peers as a highly mobile, powerful, high leaping ruckman. Later in his career, after moving from original club Sydney to Richmond, he proved effective as a strong marking tall forward. His 204 game AFL career comprised 130 games and 58 goals for the Swans between 1993 and 2001 followed by 74 games and 83 goals for the Swans from 2002 to 2006.
