Despite his Christian name, Vollugi was an extremely lightweight wingman who was a fine kick to position, and was particularly exhilarating to watch when he got in the clear. He starred for the Same Old in their 1901 Grand Final defeat of Collingwood. Despite his diminutive stature he was as game as they come, and in one match in 1905 was among the Dons' best players despite having to have 14 stitches inserted in a facial injury.

Vollugi retired at the end of the 1906 season after a comparatively brief five-season, 70 game league career. He later served as Essendon's secretary.
