Hugh Strahan was a powerful utility and defender who struggled to achieve selection early in his career before becoming a stalwart of the Geelong side later on. Strong overhead and a good kick, he excelled at minding the opposition’s resting ruckman while stationed in the back pocket. Originally from Newtown and Chilwell, he played 88 VFL games and scored 41 goals for the Cats between 1967 and 1972.
After leaving Geelong Strahan joined NWFU side Cooee where he performed impressively. In 1975 he played for Tasmania against South Australia in Melbourne in a knock-out series organised by the NFL.
