From Redan, Ian Baker was a solid and determined half back flanker who ran straight at the ball. He could also play as a ruck-rover. From 1976 to 1979 he played 50 VFL games and kicked three goals for St Kilda. He enjoyed his best season in 1977 when he appeared in 21 matches and polled eight Brownlow Medal votes. He crossed to Richmond in 1980, which would turn out to be a premiership year for the club. Baker, however, did not take part in the grand final demolition of Collingwood, and was restricted by injury to just three games for the year. He continued on the Tigers’ list for two more seasons but did not make any further senior appearances.
