While attending Geelong Grammar as a boy Jack Hawkins was a champion high jumper and it was no coincidence that when he embarked on a league football career with Geelong he quickly earned the nickname 'Jumping Jack'. Able to play in any defensive position he was most commonly used across half back. In addition to his aerial prowess he was agile and quite athletic although sometimes let down by slipshod kicking. Between1973 and 1981 he played 182 VFL games and kicked 20 goals for the Cats. He represented the VFL against Tasmania in 1979. Jack Hawkins' son Tom has been a stalwart of recent Geelong teams although unlike his dad he has played almost exclusively as a forward.
