Hawthorn recruited Jack Burke from Caulfield Amateurs and he took his senior bows in 1939. Quite unusually for the period, his seven year career spanned the whole of world war two without a break for any kind of military service. A useful follower and forward with a keen goal sense, he played a total of 74 VFL games and scored 83 goals.
