A forward early in his VFL career, Jack Ryan later became a top quality wingman. He joined Footscray in 1935 from Maryborough, and topped the Bulldogs’ goal kicking list with 25 goals in his first season before going on to play 74 games and score 37 goals over five seasons. In 1936 he helped the VFL defeat the VFA in a challenge match.

Ryan spent the 1940 and 1941 seasons at North Melbourne, adding a final nine games and two goals to his respective career tallies.
