Recruited by Collingwood from Richmond Sub-Districts Jack Thompson was a genuine utility in that he could play both forward and back or take a turn in the ruck. Between 1948 and 1951 he played slightly more senior games than he missed, ultimately registering 51 VFL appearances and 24 goals.
