Having played for Melbourne’s seconds in 1948 Jack Thomson, who had earlier played under-age football with Prahran, launched his senior career the following season. A genuine utility who could ruck and play both forward and back, he played just twice in his debut year before nailing down a regular place in 1950, and retaining it for the next three seasons. After playing 64 VFL games and scoring 46 goals for the Demons he went to Nhill as captain-coach in 1954.
